No kidding!

My day job's business, last kid leaving the nest (and the country), death in the family, and a big life change - moving from the fringes of the suburbs to smack in the middle of Phoenix... It's just been an exhausting last while, but I can see the end of some of it.

July 8th I tried to guess where the storms would pop up during this exciting but unpredictable Monsoon season we enjoy here in Arizona. I drove down near Gila Bend and waited. And waited. And it was about 115F in the desert as I waited. And really nothing happened until the sun started going down. Then the fun began -big time.

Can't tell you how much I enjoy the whole process. Even when I guess wrong - it's all fun times.

Cape Breton Island https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2017/11/cape-breton-island My girl Jean and I finally took a vacation. We hadn't gone away just the two of us in a while so this was a treat. We flew from Phoenix to Houston to Toronto to Halifax and finally to Sydney, Nova Scotia. Whew!

It was so much fun to hang out with my best friend for a week, staying at an AirBnb, driving around the island every day, going to Celtic music concerts (3 concerts!), and eating in some great and fun little places.

It was autumn and the colors were on display! Exactly the timing I'd planned. In fact my girl Jean had no idea where we were going until we arrived. Yeah, she kinda trusts me...

First Chase of 2016 https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2016/7/first-chase-of-2016 The 2016 Arizona Monsoon has begun! This was the first day this season I've had to go out and chase. The forecasts were decent for the general area so I headed down to Tucson in the morning. Found a few fun storms to chase, but nothing proved to be very dramatic or noteworthy, although it was all beautiful. I think more and more I'm finding that I can enjoy the chase for the journey and enjoy the beauty even in the less significant events. And enjoy being by myself.  Later in the afternoon as the atmosphere was clearing out and things were winding down a big storm started moving from the west through the Phoenix area, even giving a tornado warning for Buckeye! So I started heading straight up the 10 back to Phoenix. Then west on Hwy 8 where the storms were heading straight at me. I made the mistake of stopping too early and shooting from Stanfield - it was just too far away so most of what I shot was useless. And the bugs nearly ate me alive!  Lots of rain the area and I almost lost my footwear in the ditches as I trudged through the mud to get a good spot to set-up my tripods.  All in all it was still a fun day and night even though I really missed the great stuff.

A visit with my girl! https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2016/5/a-visit-with-my-girl A change in direction with my work had me in San Diego for a week of training. How awesome - my daughter Sara lives in SD! I was able to spend a couple evenings with her and hang out by the water for a little while - two treats!

Looking for Gold https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2016/4/looking-for-gold I had the day off so I spent the morning with a new friend, out in Chandler, and then the rest of the day hiking in the Superstition Mountains, on the East side of Phoenix. I'd been there earlier this year for a short hike with Jean, but not for an extended hike by myself. I took along what has become my typical gear - water, a bit of food, backpack filled with camera body and lenses, a [heavy] Manfrotto tripod and my Rhino camera slider. Ughhh... It doesn't feel so heavy until I've been going an hour or more. Probably as much as anything because the slider just doesn't have a convenient way to be carried. It has a shoulder strap, but it's just not good for hiking. Not sure how to solve it.

This is a composed image - from 12 original images to create the panoramic perspective.

On the way back out of the mountains, it was starting to get darker and I was not paying attention as I ought and suddenly in the trail, right in front of me was this cute little 4 foot Diamondback Rattlesnake. I learned how quickly I can get all my gear on the ground and my camera out and ready...!

I'm not sure if I like the silhouetted version or the 2nd one below. Which do you prefer - leave a comment below!

Prickly, Pokey https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2016/3/prickly-pokey Jean and I took Tuesday off and visited the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix. What a wild variety of desert plants - amazing! I won't try and put any descriptions with any of the photos - they speak for themselves.

KOFA Mountains https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2016/3/kofa-1 Early before the sunrise - 4am I hopped in the car and headed west on the 10, then south on 95 for about 20 miles, then east toward the KOFA National Wildlife Refuge. What an amazing place!  I was really unprepared for the beauty, the ruggedness and the sheer majesty of it.  The first frames I shot were before sunrise and the last frames were long after sunset. During the day a few hikers came in and out of the mountains, but not so many - most of the time I was alone.  I can't wait to go back to KOFA.

The Valley of Fire - 2 of 2 https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2016/1/the-valley-of-fire-2-of-2 This is the second post of two - illustrating my day-trip to the Valley of Fire, north of Las Vegas.

I'm still in awe over the place. Next year I hope to visit, but I'll bring my slider and capture some better timelapse sequences. I did take home a few sequences this year, but the clouds weren't overly interesting, and the video really begged for the camera to move. Still, I was very happy with the results.

I can really envision some of these as big 20" x 30" metal prints. If you're interested, let me know.

The Valley of Fire - 1 of 2 https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2016/1/the-valley-of-fire-1-of-2 Last week I spent a sunny and slightly warm weekend day visiting the Valley of Fire State Park, about an hour north of Las Vegas, NV. I expected beauty and wonder, but I simply was not prepared. Wow! I cannot recommend it highly enough. Again, wow!

Sometimes the color of the stone was bright orange, sometimes more pink than orange, and other times very rusty in appearance. And I'd turn a corner and where I expected the rock to be dark and shadowy, it would fairly glow.

I'll break this blog post into two simply because I want to post a bunch of photos and don't want the post to run on forever.

South of Buckeye, AZ https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2015/12/south-of-buckeye-az I drove south of Buckeye one evening last week, after work, to shoot some sunset photos. Well, the sunset ended up being fairly lackluster, but there's always something of beauty to capture. Everywhere. Always.

Hard to tell in the photo but this poor guy was stone dead and had been for a while. This was the most sunset-y of the photos I took this evening.

Wandering back to my other camera which was attempting to time-lapse the sun setting, almost stepped on this bone. No idea, but I could guess perhaps it was from a Javelina.

This little bush was lit up as the sun was almost set, but the ground surrounding was already in shadow.

The view south, looking towards Buckeye and beyond to the White Tank Mountains.

The rocks out in the desert are so varied and in this case, provide a wonderful contrast.

Hiking back to the road I stumbled across this beautiful patch - this was taken after the sun was quite down and required a 10 second exposure.

Burning up Geminid Meteor!!! https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2015/12/Geminid Monday night I went out with Mike Olbinski, Keith Kessler and Greg McCown to shoot the Geminid meteor shower which was hitting its peak. We drove a few hours south, down to the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, and then a few miles back into the desert - about 10 miles north of the US/Mexico border. We got there around 10:30 and stayed till about 3am. It was cold and a bit creepy.

We set up our cameras and shot stills and time-lapse sequences for hours in the dark - it really was a great deal of fun. And cold.

I captured a few stills, but what really caught my attention was when I looked through one of the time-lapse sequences. I noticed a bright meteor in one frame, and then for the next 90 frames (30 minutes in real time because I was shooting 3 frames per minute, 20 seconds each), smoke drifted away from where the meteor burned up. Really surprising to see, and without the time-lapse it would simply not have been noticeable.

I pulled it all together in Premier Pro, even though the quality isn't that great. Still...fun to see.

Hike up Piestewa Peak https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2015/11/piestewa Young Christian and I spent the afternoon hauling our gear up Piestewa Peak. He's learning photography, I'm making a good friend. We were hoping for a nice sunset to time-lapse, but all the clouds ran away and left us with a pretty boring sky.

Nite Shoot Experiments, Nov 10, 2015 https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2015/11/nite-shoot Out in the desert southwest of Phoenix, late into the early morning hours with two Canon 6D's. Some shots are 14mm, some are 35mm - both are amazing Rokinon lenses. Anybody who does night photography will quickly see the many errors of my ways here. This really is an experiment on several fronts. Overall I'm reasonably pleased with the results, but I've already figured out some of my mistakes and won't make them the next time around (hopefully soon).

The first the images are still shots, taken while the other camera was capturing time-lapse frames. I switched between the cameras for a few hours - while one was capturing endless time-lapse frames the other was doing still frames.

Nite Shoot Experiment 1 Still pretty light - the sun was about to go down.

Nite Shoot Experiment 2 The sun had set and this only looks like such a bright frame because it was a 20 second exposure.

Nite Shoot Experiment 3 I almost didn't keep this photo because it's just not that dramatic, and the milky way wasn't captured very well. But.. I still like it some.

If you look very carefully, you'll notice (probably not on your phone, but on a computer) I captured a few North Taurid meteors. The meteor appears on one frame, then for the next couple frames there's a poof of smoke that drifts away. I really wish I could have captured that with a longer lens, but the chances would be one in a million.

Can you believe the amount of air traffic?? Just never stops...

The Weather Channel Interview https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2015/11/WeatherChannel I didn't expect this! About a day after I released my AZ Monsoon, 2015 movie, I was contacted by The Weather Channel to do an interview via Skype, to discuss my film. No idea of the questions they'd ask or the duration of the interview, although I did expect it to be very short.

In the end the questions were fairly predictable and the whole piece was 5 minutes. I won't say it was one of my finer moments. I think I came across kinda dorky. You decide...

AZ Monsoon 2015 - The short film https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2015/11/az-monsoon-2015 This summer I stepped up my game with both the capture of images/film and also my editing of the final video. And the music - oh man, the music - it really ties together this set of film sequences!  Below is a still image from the film. Click on the still and you'll be taken to the page where you can read about the film and view it.

Late season chase with Christian https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2015/10/late-chase-with-christian The 2015 Monsoon is over in Arizona, but that didn't stop a nice storm system from moving in, mid-October. Young Christian and I ran south in the evening, chasing the one system left on the west side of the valley - down south of Gila Bend.

The sun was setting, lighting up the landscape. Christian is a new photographer so he enjoyed attempting various methods and angles. It was so peaceful and still as the sun added its amber hue to the landscape.

I also captured a time-lapse of the storm as it was unfortunately falling apart. I wish I'd been able to see the action on the other side of that hill.

Senior shoot, Roosevelt Row, Phoenix https://www.davolaninga.com/blog/2015/10/senior-shoot-roosevelt-row-phoenix On Saturday I helped my wife Jean with a Senior shoot downtown. I juggled my time between holding the scrim, shooting some video and taking a few stills as well. Sabrina was a real joy to work with - and such a beautiful girl.

And here is the video I shot during Jean's session:
